FST&C - Finance Support, Training & Consultancy

Land Securities Group Plc

A large training needs analysis followed by development of eight classroom based tailored financial training modules and two tailored e-learning financial courses.

Background:

Land Securities were founded in 1944 and are now the largest commercial property company in the UK. They own and manage nearly 30 million square feet of property and have been a Real Estate Investment Trust since 2007.

Our first meeting with Land Securities was in 2006 and we were initially asked to design and deliver a tailored training programme for one of their divisions. The results and feedback from having run this particular course several times was excellent and we were invited back later in the year and given the challenge of identifying the financial training needs for the whole of their business and to then create and deliver the solution.

Objective:

We were told that they knew that they needed to raise their financial and commercial awareness but were unsure of exactly what the issues were and what the best solution would be. They explained that this awareness needed to be increased for people at all levels within this FTSE 100 business. We also discussed the need for the solution to provide relevant techniques tailored to Land Securities that would enable course participants to apply knowledge gained from the training to their own areas of the business.

Solution:

We performed a large scale training needs analysis to determine the specific requirements and objectives for the training. It quickly became apparent that there were a variety of needs that couldn’t be met through a single solution.

As a result of the training needs analysis, we presented our analysis and recommendations to Land Securities which comprised a suite of eight different financial training modules. These modules were first rolled out in 2008 and we are delighted that they still form part of their annual development programme. This means that their employees can select the module(s) that are relevant to their own role and objectives rather than attending a long course where only a few of the topics are of use. Each module has been highly tailored to the Land Securities business and has been kept up to date with changes that have happened within their business.

Results:

The eight modules are being offered within the business on a rolling programme. Several hundred people have now attended one or more of the modules and despite being in a difficult climate for commercial property development and management, the business continues to show good financial results.

Following on from this success, we have gone on to create tailored e-learning courses for Land Securities which provides a greater opportunity for those people working remotely to continue their development and enable them and their area of the business to achieve its full financial potential.
