FST&C - Finance Support, Training & Consultancy

Greene King Plc

Development and delivery of a highly tailored course aimed at people with wide ranging roles and backgrounds giving us a broad variety of objectives to achieve.

Background:

Greene King Plc have been operating pubs and brewing for over 200 years. From its headquarters in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, Greene King has grown into a leading brewer and pub retailer. Our relationship with Greene King goes back to early 2005 when we were invited to meet with them to find out what they were looking for from a financial training programme.

Objectives:

Greene King had a mixed group of Managers from across all areas of their business who needed to increase their commercial knowledge and use of financial information. As a number of the course participants had the responsibility of negotiating loans with customers, it was critical that they would leave the course with a clear understanding of business accounts and the potential pitfalls of taking them at face value.

Solution:

FST&C immersed themselves in the culture and ways of working of the business through several meetings with key members of the finance team and also with a number of the potential course participants. The result was the design of a very specific training workshop using examples pertinent to the brewing industry and in a language that delegates could understand. The workshop was supported by one of the Greene King Finance Managers.

Since then, FST&C have continued to work with Greene King designing and delivering highly tailored workshops for each of the three divisions.

Results:

The Managers that attended the workshops now have a solid understanding of the workings of profit and loss accounts, balance sheets and cash flow.

They have a clear idea of how they compare to their competitors using key ratios and understand how their daily actions and decisions can impact the accounts.

Those that make lending decisions are now able to read and interpret their customers accounts in far more detail and ask the right questions which has resulted in them making significantly better assessments of loan requests.
